"PRIMA MISSA" FOREWORD

It is generally known that the Congregation of Rites forbids the use of native languages to sing the Order and Canon of the Holy Mass in church, except when this practice follows an established custom.

Hence the present composition cannot be sung at High Mass unless with the formal permission of the competent Ecclesiastical Authorities.

However, since nevertheless we have decided to publish the present Mass in native language it would be out of place not to add some explanations.

The Composer who, under the influence of the inspiring gregorian measures, achieved so great and general a success last year with his adaptations of ancient Chinese melodies to the Psalms, set himself the task of composing a Mass in Chinese , and this he now offers and dedicates to the Church.

Believing that this offering will be acceptable to the Church, Mother of all peoples, we have undertaken the present publication.

The text is that given in the Sunday Missal published in Hongkong by the Catholic Truth Society, we have modified it however in places, in order to preserve certain locations which are in common use among our catholic communities.

If ever the Church will grant permission for these holy praises in the native tongue to be sung in the Lord’s vineyard in China, we are sure all will be glad that these measures and harmonies have been contrived by a son of China, exceptionally gifted in the musical art.

To H.E. the Apostolic Internuncio Antonio Riberi, and to the Right Reverend Father Pacifico Perantoni, Minsiter General of the Franciscan Order, whose generosity has made it possible for us to undertake this publication, we estend, in all happiness, our repeated thanks.

IN “PRIMA MISSA”PRAEFATIO

Compertum est apud omnes Sanctorum Rituum Congregationem prohibere quominus lingua vulgaris ad partes immobiles Sacrosancti Missae Sacrificii canendas in Ecclesia adhibeatur nisi mos iste probata consuetudine commendetur. Inde sequitur concentus quos edimus a fidelibus intra Missarum solemnia cantari haud posse absque superioris Auctoritatis Ecclesiasticae licentia.
